This webinar by ACPM introduces physician recruitment professionals to an often under-recognized but increasingly valuable specialty in today’s healthcare environment: preventive medicine physicians. These fully licensed, ABMS board-certified physicians are trained at the intersection of clinical care, population health, quality improvement, and health system leadership—making them well suited for organizations focused on value-based care, risk management, health equity, and performance improvement, among other facets of healthcare.
ACPM will translate the preventive medicine specialty into practical recruitment language—clarifying who these physicians are, the roles they commonly fill, and how their training aligns with the evolving workforce needs of hospitals, health systems, and healthcare organizations. Attendees will learn how preventive medicine physicians practice across seven core domains, illustrated with real-world role examples.
In hospitals, preventive medicine physicians serve as Chief Quality Officers, and Medical Directors of Infection Prevention, Patient Safety, Employee Health, Utilization Management. Within clinics and health systems, they work as Primary Care Physicians, Chief Medical Officers, FQHC and ACO Medical Directors, and leaders of population health, chronic disease management, and preventive services. In government and public health, they hold roles such as Medical Officer, Medical Epidemiologist, Health Officer, Deputy Health Commissioner, and senior leaders within federal agencies including CDC, FDA, NIH, HRSA, and VA.
They also play key roles in military and global health, policy and advocacy, and academic institutions as health protection leaders, health policy advisors, researchers, residency program directors and more. In private industry—including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, health insurance, consulting, and technology companies—they serve as CMOs, Medical Directors, Medical Science Liaisons, and leaders in real-world evidence, HEOR, quality, population health, and clinical strategy.
This session equips AAPPR members with practical talking points, role-alignment strategies, and confidence in recruiting preventive medicine physicians as a flexible, high-impact workforce solution across the healthcare ecosystem.
