Unfortunately, there are some trends in DEI that are moving in the wrong direction and combatting the progress that has been made in moving us toward a more equitable, fair, and just society. This phenomenon has thrived off the fear of change, and it threatens all people's future success. However, some organizations, leaders, and institutions continue to recognize the correlation between mastering DEI today and the collective cultural survival of the future.
The DEI field has experienced waves of exponential momentum, one of the most recent peaks spiked between 2019 - 2021 for various reason which included widespread racism and public injustice. This momentum was fertile ground for much-needed policy changes and increased commitment to integrating and elevating DEI. The momentum continued throughout the years until early 2023.
Several trends created progress in the disruption of inequity. With policy changes to help facilitate fairness in healthcare, reduce disparities, and increase attention to wage gaps, there was a much-needed focus on the factors that perpetuate the systemic effects of structural racism that have historically placed less value on the lives of black and brown people.
As of November 2023, the landscape remains dynamic, and new trends will continue to emerge as many people in positions of power, prominence, and influence continue to hold our society accountable to the values and principles pledged as a nation.
